Masterchef 2012 - Behind the scenes

The popular new Masterchef program, currently screened on M-Net is a successful world wide concept and the first screenings thus far are proving that the show is equally popular in South Africa.

A huge amount of work is done behind the scenes and one exceptional story is the fact that all of the food that is used in the program is donated to worthy causes that take care of the poor. Masterchef appointed a reputable charity organisation in Johannesburg by the name of “The Papillon Foundation”, to manage all of the donated food distributions and to ensure that the food is distributed to the poorest of the poor in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The Papillon Foundation in turn partnered with two other reputable charities namely “Rays of Hope” in Johannesburg and “The Valcare Trust” in Cape Town to assist with the distribution of the food and the operation thus far is a huge success.

22 charities consisting of orphan homes, old age homes, child headed households, soup kitchens, granny support groups and a range of other community causes have received 15 truck loads of fresh food that were supplied to the Masterchef program by its food sponsor Woolworths.

The value of the donated food thus far is approximately R100000 and some 6000 to 7000 poor people have gone to bed with full bellies. “Although we have distributed 213 tons of donated goods such as clothing, bedding, appliances, furniture etcetera, to worthy causes since the birth of The Papillon Foundation in 2002, this is the first time that we became involved in such a large operation and I have to give credit to our distribution partners, “Rays of Hope” and “The Valcare Trust” for their co operation to help us to collect and distribute the food.

This clearly reflects the value of N.G.O’s working together and we pray that other organisations will also follow this example by banding together for greater service delivery to the poor.” Said Mr. Stephen Smith, (The founder of The Papillon Foundation.)

The Papillon Foundation is also involved in a host of other social outreach projects and their work can be seen at www.papillonfoundation.com Masterchef and their sponsors have certainly stepped up to the plate with this wonderful gesture and we are sure that the program will go from strength to strength.
